Stage 1 of 7

Mining

Copper is mined from sulphide and oxide ore bodies in open-pit and underground mines. Indian ore typically carries around one per cent copper or less, so very large volumes of rock are moved for each tonne of metal.

Key technologies

  • Exploration, drilling and resource modelling
  • Open-pit and underground mining methods
  • Haulage, ventilation and mine safety

Industry examples

  • Copper belts in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand
  • India imports most of its copper concentrate
Who we are

Nearly six decades supporting India's copper industry

ICDC links producers, users, researchers and government, and helps shape the Indian Standards for copper.

Why copper matters now

Six forces are driving demand for the metal.

Electrification

Grids and cables need more copper.

Renewable energy

Solar and wind are copper-hungry.

Electric mobility

An EV uses far more copper than a petrol car.

Data centres

Power and cooling at huge scale.

Defence

Reliable conductors for critical systems.

Circular economy

Copper recycles without losing quality.

What we have helped build

A few of the changes ICDC helped bring to Indian industry.

Solar water heaters

Popularised copper-panelled solar water heating.

Fire sprinklers

Promoted copper sprinkler systems in buildings.

House wiring

Helped reintroduce copper house-wiring cables.

Import substitution

Lab and pilot-scale R&D for homegrown materials.

Indian Standards

Technical input to BIS for copper standards.

Failure analysis

Root-cause help for producers and users.

Global connections

Connected nationally and globally
